Last Friday, I went to watch La Vie en Rose (released in France as La Môme, literally: The Kid), a 2007 French cinema film directed by Cesar Award nominee Olivier Dahan, about the life of the legendary French chanteuse Édith Piaf, and is named after her signature song. The film won five Césars, including one for best actress, and Marion Cotillard won an Academy Award for her performance, marking the first time an Oscar had been given for a French-language role. She is also the first French actress to win a Best Actress BAFTA and the first to win a Comedy or Musical Golden Globe for a foreign language role. It also became the first French cinema film to win two Oscars, the other for Makeup (Wikipedia, 2009). It is an extremely artistic film, and I feel that the lead actress, Marion Cotillard displayed superb acting skills. I would strongly recommend this film if you have not watched it!!

Leadership renewal in MHA

THE Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced a renewal of leadership and changes in senior home team appointments on Wednesday.
Mr Khoo Boon Hui, currently the Commissioner of Police, will be appointed Senior Deputy Secretary of the MHA on Feb 1 next year. The 55-year-old will hand over command of his post to Mr Ng Joo Hee, the current Director of Prisons, on the same day.
Mr Khoo, who has spent 12-1/2 years at the helm of the Singapore Police Force, will remain in the Administrative Service, where he is a Senior Administrative Officer Grade 5.
In a press statement, the MHA said that Mr Khoo will, inter alia, oversee 'the strategic development of MHA's regional and international collaboration and capacity development initiatives and projects across the Home Team departments'. He will concurrently fulfill his responsibilities as President of Interpol.
Mr Ng, the incoming Commissioner of Police, has served 24 years in the SPF. In this time, he has held various key appointments, including that of Deputy Director Criminal Investigation Department and Director Police Intelligence Department.

The Singapore Seminar held @ Millennium Gloucester Hotel last Saturday was an insightful experience for me. It aims to clarify doubts, provoke thoughts and challenge us to think a step further. The food served was mediocre, but I could not complain as how often do I get to eat Singapore-style food. I had the opportunity to meet and make new friends too. Really enjoyed it!! =DBEIJING - A PHOTO showing a plainclothes policeman pulling a naked woman by the hair during a prostitution bust in central China has caused outrage on the Internet, where it has been widely circulated.
The photo was one of a series taken by local media covering a police raid on prostitution and gambling dens in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province, said the official China Daily, which also published the controversial picture.
'Police in the mainland grab a person's hair in the process of law enforcement, and forcefully take naked photos by violent means,' one online user said Wednesday on popular web portal Chinaren. 'This is a criminal offence - much more serious than prostitution!'
A video clip of the raid, also widely available online, shows the plainclothes policeman bash down a door in what appears to be an upscale massage parlour.
'How many have you had tonight?' the policeman says to a naked woman sitting down on the floor - an alleged prostitute - as a client, also naked, crouches near her. The hair-pulling incident only appears in the still photo, not the video.
A spokeswoman at the Zhengzhou police bureau, who refused to be named, told AFP an investigation into the case was ongoing, but refused to provide any further details. -- AFP
