Shock as Diversity win Britain's Got Talent

We are in shock! For weeks many (including us) had believed it was a one horse race, but this year's Britain's Got Talent ended with a surprise result as Diversity were crowned winners.

The dance act managed to topple odds-on favourite Susan Boyle to win the chance to perform for the Queen at this year's Royal Variety Performance, along with a cash prize of £100,000.

Saxophonist Julian Smith finished in third place with Susan coming second.

48-year-old Scottish singer Susan Boyle had been the favourite to win after weeks of media attention which saw her become a star across the world after her video was viewed more than 150 million times on You Tube.

Diversity's victory is one of the biggest-ever upsets in the history of reality TV. We haven't been this shocked since Gina G failed to win Eurovision for the UK in 1996!

The following article makes me very upset. It also disturbs me that the girl's mother is still alive, and has allowed her daughter to be 'raised by dogs'.


'Barking' Feral Girl 'Raised By Dogs'

A five-year-old girl who was allegedly "brought up" by cats and dogs in a flat has been taken into care, Russian police have revealed.

The child, who lived in the eastern Siberian city of Chita, could not speak Russian and acted like an dog.

"For five years, she was 'brought up' by several dogs and cats and had never been outside," a police statement said.

"The unwashed girl was dressed in filthy clothes, had the clear attributes of an animal and jumped at people," it said.

The flat had no heat, water or sewage system.

A police spokeswoman said the girl, known as Natasha, is being monitored by psychologists in an orphanage.

Her mother was being questioned but her father has not been found yet.

She has the appearance of a two year old, although her real age is five.

The youngster refuses to eat with a spoon and has taken on many of the gestures of the animals with which she lived, police said.

"When carers leave the room, the girl jumps at the door and barks," the police said.

Feral children, the stuff of folklore all over the world, usually exhibit the behaviour of the animals with whom they have had closest contact.

The condition is known as the Mowgli Syndrome after the fictional child from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book who was raised by wolves.

Such children have usually built strong ties with the animals with whom they lived and find the transition to normal human existence highly traumatic.

Today, Singapore has reported its first flu case (ST, 2009). I believe that this will not be the only one, as the evolution of the different modes of transport has made travelling more convenient and efficient. This thus facilitates the spread of virus/diseases more easily, which in this case is the A (H1N1) flu strain. I have to be more vigilant and continue to maintain high standards of personal hygiene at all times when I go for my travelling trip in June.

Anyway, MSK will be held in detention under the ISA for two years. During this time, he will undergo rehabilitation programme which includes debating with religious experts on Islam (ST, 2009). Honestly speaking, I am not sure if this will help to change his deep-grained mindset. After being radicalised for several years, I believe that it will be an uphill task. Even when he has escaped, he has continue to plot against Singapore, and I feel that this shows that he is a revengeful person. I often wonder how does one determine if a person has been fully de-radicalised. I mean the person could have pretended that he/she is not an extremist anymore right? However, I am thankful that there is follow-up monitoring in Singapore, ensuring that the person is on the right track. Notwithstanding this, I remain hopeful that the rehabilitation programme will be useful. Indonesia has seen successful examples that resulting in ex-terrorists rehabilitating current terrorists. Hence, nothing is impossible right??

In San Francisco, Carlifornia's Supreme Court upheld a ban on gay marriage there, but said that some 18,000 same-sex weddings carried out before the ban took weffect would remain valid. The latest Calirfornia ruling comes after a rollercoaster 12 months that have seen activists on both sides of the same-sex marriage debate lurch from jubilation to despair. Last Many, California's Supreme Court voted four to three to legalize same-sex marriage, delighting gay activists in the most populous US state and sending thousands of same-sex couple rushing to tie the knot (ST, 2009). Honestly speaking, if same-sex marriage is to be allowed in Singapore, I am absolutely fine with it. I feel that the sex orientation of a person is innate, and is not that person's fault. If there is a choice, I think that most people would prefer to be the same as the mass, i.e. attracted only to the opposite sex. Since one cannot be blames for his/her sex orientation, why should we condemn them. Nonetheless, I am not one who will press for the gorverment to legalise such marriages. How successful same-sex marriage becomes legalise depends on how open the society is, how tolerant the society is and how willing the society is, to be able to accept them, include them. I think that it will still be a long way before Singapore actually legalise such marriages. This is because the traditional mindset that unions should be between opposite sexes is still ingrained in our society. Also, i think that even if we are accept to accept that some people do have a sex orientation that deviates from the convention, it does not mean that we will be able to tolerate them to the extent that we view their marriages as 'normal'.

In Indonesia, disabled pedestrians are required to wear signs identifying them as handicapped under new traffic regulations passed unanimously by parliament. Even though I understand the rationale behind it, i.e. for their safety, I feel that it is rather discriminating. If I were to put myself in their shoes, I will not want to wear such signs. Rather, I support the view of transport experts that the government should instead focus on providing facilities such as level footpaths and wheelchair ramps (ST, 2009).

I have been watching lots of dramas these days. Currently, I have just finished watching a Korean drama 'Queen of Housewives'. The only reason on why did I watched this drama is because its episode ratings has been ranked either first or second nationwide after the BOF series has ended. Overall, I think that this series is not too bad, it is about marital issues and office politics.



Synopsis

Chun Ji Ae and Yang Bong Soon are high school classmates who did not have the best relationship with each other. Ji Ae was the most popular girl in school whereas Bong Soon was the girl that was always made fun of. Years later, their roles are reversed as Bong Soon's husband, Han Joon Hyuk, is very successful whereas Ji Ae's husband, Ohn Dal Soo, is just an average company worker. Things get complicated when Dal Soo starts an extra-marital affair with his boss's wife, Eun So Hyuk. How will Ji Ae react to this?

She is the youngest daughter of the founder of Queens Group and her husband is the company president of Queens Food.She married her husband under an arranged marriage set up by her parents to solidify the merger of her in-law’s company with her family’s company. At home, her husband shows no interest in sex but he carries on multiple affairs. So So-hyun has a sixth sense for sniffing out cheating husbands. After having had enough of her husband’s infidelity, she shocks her husband with an explicit ultimatum.She tells him that she’ll have a torrid affair with one of the employees that work for him.

I have initially wanted to seat through the 3 hours FTH exams, however 20 minutes till time's up, I just could not tolerate it anymore. I needed to go to the restroom very badly so I gave up. After that, I went back and had a drama marathon again. I am currently watching Brilliant Legacy. It is not too bad, a Cinderella story.

I was in the midst of watching drama and eating my second yogurt of the day after my sumptuous dinner and ... ...

Shee Yee and Soo Leng APPEARED!!! It turned out that actually, they wanted to pop by my place yesterday, but I did not see the message. So sweet of them!! I had not expected this as it is now the exam period. I forced them to stay and cooked dinner for them, a simple and plain one. Then, they suddenly took out a birthday cake and sang me a happy birthday song. I felt so touched!! The cake was good!! Hopefully the dinner I cooked for them is nice and edible. =D

I had a shock this morning!! I woke up and checked my watch for the time. Guess what?? It was already 8.30am, and my first paper starts at 9.30am. Thank goodness I reached the Sports Hall at about 9.15am. Initially, I thought to myself that am I going to be late for for my first exam in UK. I shall not sleep like a pig next time round. For both papers, most people left quite early. The first paper was Modelling Tools and Concepts. By the time three hours is up, I estimated that only about 60-65% of the cohort were still present. For the second paper, Electrical, Electronics and Computer Systems, we have 40 mcqs to do within 2hrs. Jealous right?? A far cry from that during the ‘A’ levels whereby we have to complete 40 mcqs within 1 hour. Therefore, by the time two hours is out, I gauged that only 30-35% of the cohort were still in the Great Hall. I sat at my desk through the exam. I think that it is probably I am used to sitting throughout the exam, and not leaving halfway through. After that, aimi, aesha, steph and I went to Mojo for dinner. Steph still have 20 quid left in her uni ID, so she only ordered a cup of mocha, and went back to Shackleton to have her dinner. The rest of us ordered Mexican Panini. I must say that it was good. Its appearance was appealing as well. Unfortunately, I did not bring along my handphone and camera to take photos of it. I shal remember to bring them along the next time I go there. Aimi and aesha treated me to a slice of cake. It was GOOD!! Thank you so much!! I would like to thank aimi, aesha, xunyang, steph, jenny and paul for the card. My first paper birthday card in UK!! Haha..A HUGE THANK YOU to my dearest family for the birthday wishes and card as well!! Also, a BIG THANK YOU to everyone else who posted on my wall in facebook!! I felt really overwhelmed and touched by the birthday wishes that I have received from SO MANY MANY PEOPLE!!!

Now, for the bad news. I have to pay 57.50 quid for damaging the microwave oven. Can you hear it? My heart BREAKING INTO PIECES??? All because of my inexperience with the microwave oven. REGRETTED IT!! Sigh..but what can I do? What is done is done, I cannot reverse the damage. This is indeed a PRECIOUS and INVALUABLE lesson to be learnt from. Do not ever use something unless I am sure of how to operate it. So sad. Never mind lah..=D
